The GFBRAS had started Future Boundary Growers in 2008 by working with local greenhouses and the school district to donate 450 vegetable plants, medium, and pots. The society presented a power point presentation and demonstrated how to transplant the seedling to bigger pots.
Students repotted in the class room and took their plants home to grow. Students where encouraged to bring their finished projects to their local fall fair for participation ribbons and prizes for overall projects.
This year the society is working towards the schools being able to germinate their own plants and propose a five year project that will see the schools have their own school greenhouses and school garden.
It is hoped that in the future we will have grown the farmers locally.
The tie between healthy local food, where our food comes from and the environmental cost of bringing our food to our region has never been closer to the forefront .This week when the highway was closed for three days. Our food stores shelves started looking bare.
On Jan 11 09 a meeting was held to look at getting school district 51 going green!!

We are looking forward to working with this group!!
A very special THANK YOU to the Boundary Wood Workers Guild
Without their donation of time and labor our local schools would not have the germination tables needed to facilitate the Future Boundary Growers and the SD51 Greener Schools Initiative. This talented and dynamic group of artisans can be contacted at mida66@telus.net or through Dave Milton at (250) 442-8062
